The Prompt I Couldn't Keep to Myself

It was late on a Tuesday night. I had just finished experimenting with a new AI prompt, one of those unlocks where you sit back and think, "Oh. That changes things."

My first instinct was not to save it in a doc, or file it away for later, or polish it into some grand reveal. My first instinct was to open one of my group chats and fire it off to a few industry peers.

So what was the prompt? Rewind to this time last year. I was headed to the POSSIBLE conference in Miami. As usual, my agenda was packed. Every hour had a meeting on it, and I knew the hallway chats and dinner conversations were going to be just as valuable as anything on the official schedule. So I built a prompt in ChatGPT that could help anyone at a conference keep track of it all. Every meeting, every bump in, every conversation, captured just by talking into your phone naturally throughout the day. By the end of the week, you'd have a full summary and a clean list of action items. No more scribbling notes. No more forgetting follow ups. And certainly no more losing that one lesson you picked up in a hallway you can never quite find again.

Within minutes, three people had tried it. Within an hour, one of them had improved it. By the next morning, someone had taken that improved version and applied it to a workflow I hadn't even thought of. One late night prompt had quietly multiplied into four different wins across the team, and I hadn't lifted a finger after that first message.

And it seemed my prompt had legs. People were comping up to me introducing themselves and letting me know how much I changed their lives with that prompt that now went viral!

That is the moment I realized something I had been doing my whole career, without quite naming it. When you learn something useful, the clock starts ticking. The faster you pass it on, the more it grows.

Why Fresh Beats Polished

There is a version of sharing knowledge where you wait. You wait until you fully understand the thing. You wait until you have a framework. You wait until you can package it into a neat little talk or a tidy post. By the time you get there, two things have happened. One, the moment has passed. Two, you have quietly convinced yourself that the insight was smaller than it actually was.

Fresh insight has energy. It carries the voltage of discovery. When you share it the same day you found it, the people on the receiving end can feel that you are still figuring it out in real time, and that invites them in. They push back, they add, they stress test. You end up in a conversation instead of a lecture, and conversations are where ideas actually multiply.

With my team, AI has been the perfect example. We are all learning. None of us is the expert. So when I find a prompt that works, I send it. No preamble, no disclaimer. Just, "try this." What comes back is almost always better than what I sent.

The 10x Effect

Here is the part that took me years to fully appreciate. When you teach something while it is still fresh, you are not just helping the other person. You are continuing your own learning through them. Their questions expose gaps you didn't know you had. Their applications reveal angles you never considered. Their improvements become your improvements.

That is how one lesson becomes ten. The original insight was yours. The ten versions that come back are the compound interest on generosity. This is what real growth looks like inside a team, inside a career, and inside a life. It is not hoarding. It is handing the torch forward and watching the room get brighter.

How I Try to Live This

I have a simple rule now. If I learn something on a Monday that I think could help someone else, I share it by Tuesday. Not a draft, not a thread, not a future newsletter. A message, a voice note, a forwarded link with one line of context. The cost of sharing is almost zero. The cost of sitting on it is that the insight gets stale and the moment to teach it passes.

This is also why I write these lessons. Each one is, in a sense, me teaching what I just learned, or what I just finished relearning the hard way. If I waited until I had it all figured out, I would never write a word.
