The Advice Nobody Asked For (But Everyone Gave)
Recently someone new joined my team, and being ambitious and take charge, she went around asking each of my existing team members for advice on working with me. Every single one of them said the same thing: don't show up late. It drives Dan nuts.
I laughed when I heard that, partly because it's true, and partly because I'm guilty of it too sometimes. Life happens. Traffic sucks. Calendars stack on top of each other until your day looks like a game of Tetris nobody's winning.
Being late isn't charming. It's not a personality trait. It's a habit, and it's one people remember.
What Lateness Actually Says
One of the simplest leadership signals you can send is showing up early. Not for the optics, but because it shows respect. And if you're late more often than not, it says something whether you realize it or not.
It usually says: my time is more important than yours. I didn't plan for this to matter. You can wait.
Nobody says those words out loud. But that's how it lands on the other side of the table.
The Fix Is Boring, and That's the Point
Show up five minutes early. Use that time to breathe, prep, or connect with whoever's already in the room. If you're running late, give people a heads up, don't make them guess. And if you're the leader, model it, because your team is watching whether they say so or not.
Being early isn't about being perfect. It's about being intentional, and in leadership and in life, that intention speaks louder than you think.
The Lesson
Showing up early is one of the cheapest ways to show respect, and one of the most expensive habits to break once you let it slide.
